IMPORTANT: Our lab must have received your pet’s hair sample within the past 60 days, otherwise a physical test kit must be purchased with the digital test/upgrade.

Pets need the right balance of vitamins, minerals, and nutrients to stay healthy and active. Even with a complete diet, imbalances can occur that affect digestion, skin, energy, or immunity. This test identifies nutritional imbalances so you can better support your pet’s overall wellness.

Your pet’s response is measured against 112 nutrients across categories including amino acids, fatty acids, ionic minerals, macrominerals, trace minerals, and vitamins. Pinpointing these imbalances helps you make more informed choices about diet and supplements.

No new hair sample is needed if your pet’s hair sample was received by our lab within the past 60 days. Simply purchase the test, and updated results will be uploaded to your 5Strands account within 3 days.

Your pet’s nutritional imbalance results are divided into 4 levels so you can see how their body is responding to different vitamins and minerals. This test does not measure how much of a nutrient is in the body. Instead, it shows how well your pet’s system is currently managing or regulating that nutrient, which may reflect poor absorption, depletion, overload, or increased demand.

Step-by-Step Balance Plan:

Step 1: Red (High Imbalance) may indicate poor utilization, depletion, or overload. Remove certain foods as needed and focus on rotating in whole-food sources of that nutrient. If supplementation is required, choose whole-food–based supplements to support balance while the body resets.

Step 2: Yellow (Moderate Imbalance) may point to poor absorption or higher demand. Prioritize variety by rotating whole-food sources of the nutrient. If you use supplements, opt for whole-food forms rather than synthetic versions.

Step 3: Green (Mild Imbalance) may suggest the body is working harder to absorb or regulate the nutrient. Monitor closely and add more variety from whole-food sources. Supplement only if needed, and again, whole-food supplements are preferred.

Step 4: Grey (No Significant Response) means your pet is currently handling that nutrient well. No immediate changes are needed, but rotating food sources helps maintain balance and reduces the chance of future imbalance.

Step 5: Retest every 4 months to track progress, since nutritional needs can shift with diet, stress, or any lifestyle changes.

Frequently Asked Questions

Even with high-quality food, pets don’t always absorb nutrients the way we expect. Some struggle to process proteins or minerals, while others burn through vitamins faster due to stress, age, or activity levels. This test shows where those gaps may be.

It doesn’t necessarily mean your pet isn’t getting enough of a nutrient in their food. An imbalance can point to poor absorption, higher demand, or difficulty regulating certain vitamins or minerals. For example, a dog might eat calcium-rich food but still show signs of low bone strength if absorption is off.

Yes. Low energy, dull coat, slow recovery, or changes in behavior are often linked to nutritional strain. Because these symptoms are broad, they’re easy to misinterpret without testing.

Most owners start by adjusting food variety or rotating in different protein sources. Others work with their vet to fine-tune supplements. The goal is to give the body what it’s missing without overloading it.

They can. Results reflect your pet’s current state and will shift as diet, gut health, and overall wellness improve. Many owners retest after changes to see how their adjustments are working.

Knowing that no allergy testing is 100 % accurate, I have found 5 Strand to be the least invasive and most thorough sensitivity testing I have used in the last 28 years of practice.

After using 5Strands, we uncovered a surprising range of sensitivities in our dog—not just the usual suspects, but things we never would’ve guessed. From ingredients in his daily food and treats to environmental chemicals, molds, and even plants, the results gave us a full picture of what might be affecting him. Now we’re one step closer to finding the root cause of his nonstop scratching and finally giving him the relief he deserves.
