Kibble and wet foods often contain hidden ingredients that may trigger intolerances in pets. Fillers, synthetic nutrients, and additives can contribute to digestive issues, itching, or changes in energy. This test identifies intolerances to the ingredients most commonly found in kibble and wet food so you can make better choices for your pet’s health.

Kibble & Wet Categories Tested: Color Agent (Natural Color, Synthetic Dye), Dehydrated (Dairy, Legume, Mushroom, Plant, Plant Fiber, Root, Vegetable), Extracted (Broth, Dairy Fat, Dairy Protein, Marine Oil, Plant Oil), Fermentable Substrate (Prebiotics), Fractionated Protein (Grain, Plant), Functional Additive (Anti-Caking Agent, Antioxidant, Emulsifier, Humectant, Thickening Agent), Ground (Grain, Legume, Mushroom, Plant, Shellfish, Spice), Hydrolyzed (Animal Digest, Dairy Protein, Plant Protein), Microbial Culture (Probiotics), Microbial Metabolite (Postbiotics, Fermentation Products), Milled (Grain), Palatability Additive (Sweetener), Rendered (By-Product, Fat, Insect, Meat, Organ, Seafood), Retorted (Meat, Organ, Seafood, Vegetable), Synthetic (Amino Acid, Minerals, Nutrient, Vitamin), Yeast Product (Yeast)

Air-Dried & Freeze-Dried Categories Tested: Air-Dried (Fruit, Grain, Insect, Legume, Meat, Mushroom, Organ, Plant, Root, Seafood, Seed, Tissue, Vegetable), Freeze-Dried (Dairy, Fruit, Legume, Meat, Mushroom, Organ, Plant, Root, Seafood, Vegetable)

No new hair sample is needed if your pet’s hair sample was received by our lab within the past 60 days. Simply purchase the test, and updated results will be uploaded to your 5Strands account within 3 days.

Your pet’s results are divided into 4 levels so you can clearly see how their body is responding to different ingredients. This structure helps you know which foods to avoid, what to limit, and what is generally safe in moderation.

Step-by-Step Elimination Plan:

Step 1: Remove all Red (High Intolerance) ingredients from your pet’s diet for 6–8 weeks. This gives their digestive system time to reset and recover.

Step 2: Use Yellow (Moderate Intolerance) ingredients sparingly in your pet’s diet. Only reintroduce them once symptoms improve, and carefully track how your pet responds.

Step 3: Reduce Green (Mild Intolerance) ingredients from your pet's diet. They may be tolerated in small amounts, but repeated exposure could still place stress on your pet’s gut.

Step 4: Continue with Grey (No Significant Response) ingredients, but maintain variety in their meals. Rotating foods helps reduce the chance of new intolerances developing.

Step 5: After the elimination period, reintroduce foods one at a time, leaving 3–5 days between each new ingredient while watching for symptoms. Retesting every 4 months helps ensure your pet’s diet continues to match their changing needs.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. Even premium diets can contain fillers, powders, or additives that are harder to process. Over time, eating the same formula every day can overwhelm digestion and lead to hidden stress.

That can happen. A clear result means her body is tolerating those foods at the moment, but other factors like environmental sensitivities or overexposure to a single ingredient may still contribute. Many owners use this test alongside others to get a fuller picture.

They can. Some pets react to synthetic nutrients or additives often found in kibble, while others struggle more with proteins or preservatives in wet foods. The test separates these responses so you can see where stress is coming from.

It doesn’t always mean you must remove it forever. Some owners rotate in other protein sources, try different brands, or feed smaller amounts while supporting digestion. The goal is to reduce strain, not eliminate every food at once.

Because the testing looks at frequency responses in a controlled setting, not current diet history. A flagged food shows how your pet might react if exposed again or suggests that similar ingredients already in their meals are adding to the load.

Knowing that allergies are only the root cause a small percentage of the time, I have found 5Strands' test to be the least invasive and most thorough intolerance and sensitivity testing I have used in the last 28 years of practice.

After using 5Strands, we uncovered a surprising range of sensitivities in our dog—not just the usual suspects, but things we never would’ve guessed. From ingredients in his daily food and treats to environmental chemicals, molds, and even plants, the results gave us a full picture of what might be affecting him. Now we’re one step closer to finding the root cause of his nonstop scratching and finally giving him the relief he deserves.
