Kibble and wet food make mealtime easy, but they often include fillers, powders, and additives that are hard for pets to digest. When those ingredients build up, you might notice stomach upset, itching, low energy, or even changes in behavior.

The 5Strands Kibble & Wet Pet Food Intolerance Test uses a small hair sample collected at home to screen 400+ ingredients. The results show which foods may be putting stress on your dog or cat's gut. With this knowledge, you can cut back on problem foods, build a simple elimination plan, and give your pet's body a chance to reset.

Dairy Powder, Meat Powder, Seafood Powder, Grain Powder, Legume Powder, Fruit Powder, Vegetable Powder, Mushroom Powder, Fillers, Emulsifiers, Flavor Enhancers, Food Dyes, Prebiotic Powders, Synthetic Vitamins, Synthetic Minerals, Synthetic Amino Acids, Thickening Agents

Once your Kibble & Wet Pet Food Intolerance Test kit arrives: (1) Register your 5Strands kit at 5Strands.com or through our mobile app using the unique ID code included inside the box. (2) Collect 10–15 strands of your pet’s hair, no root required. (3) Place the hair sample in the prepaid envelope provided and mail it back to our lab. (4) Results will be delivered to your email within 4 business days of the lab receiving your sample. (5) After 60 days, your pet’s sample will be permanently disposed of.

Your pet’s results are divided into 4 levels so you can clearly see how their body is responding to different ingredients. This structure helps you know which foods to avoid, which to limit, and which are generally safe in moderation while working toward better balance.

Step-by-Step Elimination Plan:

Step 1: Remove all Red (High Intolerance) ingredients from your pet’s diet for 6–8 weeks. This gives their digestive system time to reset and recover.

Step 2: Limit Yellow (Moderate Intolerance) ingredients during this elimination phase. Reintroduce them only if symptoms improve, and closely monitor how your pet responds.

Step 3: Feed Green (Mild Intolerance) ingredients sparingly. They may be tolerated in small amounts, but repeated exposure could still place stress on your pet’s gut.

Step 4: Continue with Grey (No Significant Response) ingredients, but maintain variety in their meals. Rotating foods helps reduce the chance of new intolerances developing.

Step 5: After the elimination period, reintroduce foods one at a time, leaving 3–5 days between each new ingredient while watching for symptoms. Retesting every 4 months helps ensure your pet’s diet continues to match their changing needs.

Frequently Asked Questions

Many processed pet foods include fillers, powders, and additives that don’t sit well with every dog or cat. If their gut or digestive enzymes struggle to break them down, the result can show up as bloating, diarrhea, itchy skin, or a drop in energy.

Each food frequency was tested against your pet’s hair sample in a controlled setting. A flagged result shows how their body may respond if exposure becomes regular, or that similar ingredients already in their diet may be creating stress.

Yes. Even premium kibble or wet foods can create stress if the same formula is fed daily, or if your pet lacks the digestive enzymes needed to break down a certain food item. Over time, certain proteins, additives, or nutrients may accumulate and overwhelm the digestive system, leading to food intolerances.

Foods are categorized into four levels: insignificant, mild, moderate, and severe responses. Items in the higher levels should be prioritized for elimination or rotation to help reduce your pet’s symptoms. Reference these results while combing through pet food ingredient labels to make sure the food you're buying works for their unique gut.

This always varies depending on the animal, but most of our customers see noticeable results in just a few weeks. Watch for subsiding skin irritation and gut discomfort symptoms, and most importantly, stay consistent with your elimination plan to maximize results.

Knowing that allergies are only the root cause a small percentage of the time, I have found 5Strands' test to be the least invasive and most thorough intolerance and sensitivity testing I have used in the last 28 years of practice.

After using 5Strands, we uncovered a surprising range of sensitivities in our dog—not just the usual suspects, but things we never would’ve guessed. From ingredients in his daily food and treats to environmental chemicals, molds, and even plants, the results gave us a full picture of what might be affecting him. Now we’re one step closer to finding the root cause of his nonstop scratching and finally giving him the relief he deserves.

Hidden Ingredients Can Disrupt Your Pet’s Diet

Kibble and canned foods may look balanced on the label, but many contain powders, fillers, and additives that can be difficult for pets to process. Ingredients like dairy powder, emulsifiers, food dyes, or synthetic vitamins can quietly contribute to digestive upset, itchy skin, or low energy without an obvious connection to the food.

The 5Strands Kibble & Wet Pet Food Intolerance Test analyzes your pet’s energetic response to 410 ingredients commonly used in processed diets. From meat, grain, and seafood powders to prebiotics and synthetic additives, this test provides a complete view of what may be stressing your dog or cat’s system. With clear results, you can eliminate problem ingredients, choose better food options, and help your pet's gut microbiome reset naturally.
