The 5Strands Food & Beverage Intolerance Test goes deeper than our food intolerance test. It checks over 860 food and drink items across 30 categories.

If you’re dealing with bloating, diarrhea, breakouts, or weight gain, chances are you may be consuming foods you have an intolerance to. Food intolerances are developed when your body's lacking sufficient digestive enzymes or your gut microbiome is imbalanced.

The best way to identify your intolerances is with this at-home food sensitivity test. Once you know your Level 2 and 3 offenders, you can start cutting them out and bringing in more whole foods to help your body naturally rebuild its ability to process them.

We measure your body’s response to 210 food and drink ingredients across key categories like proteins, fruits, vegetables, grains, sweeteners, beverages, preservatives, food dyes, acidity regulators, and alcohols.

No new hair sample is needed if your hair sample was received by our lab within the past 60 days. Simply purchase the test, and updated results will be uploaded to your 5Strands account within 3 days.

Your results are divided into 4 levels so you can clearly see how your body is responding to different ingredients. This structure helps you know which foods to avoid, what to limit, and what is generally safe in moderation.

Step-by-Step Elimination Plan:

Step 1: Remove all Red (High Intolerance) ingredients from your diet for 6–8 weeks. This gives their digestive system time to reset and recover.

Step 2: Limit Yellow (Moderate Intolerance) ingredients during this elimination phase. Reintroduce them only if symptoms improve, and closely monitor how you respond.

Step 3: Feed Green (Mild Intolerance) ingredients sparingly. They may be tolerated in small amounts, but repeated exposure could still place stress on your gut.

Step 4: Continue with Grey (No Significant Response) ingredients, but maintain variety in their meals. Rotating foods helps reduce the chance of new intolerances developing.

Step 5: After the elimination period, reintroduce foods one at a time, leaving 3–5 days between each new ingredient while watching for symptoms. Retesting every 4 months helps ensure your diet continues to match their changing needs.

Frequently Asked Questions

Drinks are often overlooked when people think about intolerances, but they can play just as big a role. Coffee, teas, sodas, and even certain juices may trigger stress in the gut. This test screens both foods and beverages so nothing slips through the cracks.

The report doesn’t diagnose or measure nutrient levels. Instead, it shows which items may be overloading your digestion or energy at this moment in time. You’ll see a ranked list that highlights where your system is handling things smoothly and where it may be struggling.

Not directly. The testing compares your hair sample’s energy signature against each food and beverage frequency in a controlled setting. That means an item can show up whether you eat or drink it every day or not at all.

Possibly. People often report brain fog, breakouts, low energy, or stomach upset without realizing drinks like coffee or wine—or foods they consider healthy—could be involved. The test helps connect those dots so you can try removing or rotating the flagged items.

Most people start by removing or reducing the red-flagged items for a few weeks. Then they reintroduce them one at a time to see what changes. Others bring the report to their nutritionist or healthcare provider for extra guidance. The point isn’t restriction—it’s learning how your body handles what you consume every day.
