The Day After New Years Eve is not Always Happy :(

As we look forward into the new year, the first day is not always a bright one for everyone. Some may have stayed up late and over indulged with food and alcohol the night before and are feeling like the pit of misery. For those of you that may have only had one or two alcoholic beverages but are still feeling under the weather, we may have an answer for you as to why:

Alcohol intolerance can cause immediate, uncomfortable reactions after you drink alcohol. The most common signs and symptoms are stuffy nose and skin flushing.

Alcohol intolerance is caused by a genetic condition in which the body can’t break down alcohol efficiently. The only way to prevent these uncomfortable reactions is to avoid alcohol.

Although not a true allergy, in some cases, what seems to be an alcohol intolerance might be your reaction to something in an alcoholic beverage — such as chemicals, grains or preservatives.Combining alcohol with certain medications also can cause reactions.

Signs and symptoms of alcohol intolerance — or of a reaction to ingredients in an alcoholic beverage — may include:

  • Facial redness (flushing)
  • Red, itchy skin bumps (hives)
  • Worsening of pre-existing asthma
  • Runny or stuffy nose
  • Low blood pressure
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Diarrhea

When to see a doctor

Having a mild intolerance to alcohol or something else in alcoholic beverages might not require a trip to a doctor. Simply avoid alcohol, limit how much you drink or avoid certain types of alcoholic beverages.

However, if you have a serious reaction or severe pain, see your doctor. Also, if your symptoms seem to be linked to an allergy or a medication you’re taking, see your doctor.

Alcohol intolerance may occur when your body doesn’t have the proper enzymes to break down (metabolize) the toxins in alcohol.

Other ingredients commonly found in alcoholic beverages, especially in beer or wine, can cause intolerance reactions. These include:

  • Sulfites or other preservatives
  • Chemicals, grains or other ingredients
  • Histamine, a byproduct of fermentation or brewing

In some cases, reactions can be triggered by a true allergy to a grain such as corn, wheat or rye or to another substance in alcoholic beverages.

Rarely, severe pain after drinking alcohol is a sign of a more serious disorder, such as Hodgkin’s lymphoma.

Risk factors

Risk factors for alcohol intolerance or other reactions to alcoholic beverages include:

  • Having asthma or hay fever (allergic rhinitis)
  • Having an allergy to grains or to another food
  • Having Hodgkin’s lymphoma

Depending on the cause, complications of alcohol intolerance or other reactions to alcoholic beverages can include:

  • Migraines. Drinking alcohol can trigger migraines in some people, possibly as a result of histamines contained in some alcoholic beverages. Your immune system also releases histamines during an allergic reaction.
  • A severe allergic reaction. In rare instances, an allergic reaction can be life-threatening (anaphylactic reaction) and require emergency treatment.

Unfortunately, nothing can prevent reactions to alcohol or ingredients in alcoholic beverages. To avoid a reaction, avoid alcohol or the particular substance that causes your reaction.

Read beverage labels to see whether they contain ingredients or additives you know cause a reaction, such as sulfites or certain grains. Be aware, however, that labels might not list all ingredients.

Meow you know how to buy a Kittymas Tree!

Did you ask your cat which Christmas tree to get this year?     Did you know there are over 16 types of Christmas trees? They fall into categories of Fir, Spruce, Pine, Cedar, and Cypress. Each with its own characteristics ranging from light to dark colored needles, and low to strong fragrances. This year when you are deciding which type of tree you want to strap to your car and adorn with decorations, ask your cat for their preference! That’s not to say we encourage your cats to climb up or knock over your Christmas tree, but consider how your choice could affect your cat’s health. Many already know that other holiday plants are poisonous to cats, like Poinsettia, Mistletoe and Holly, but what about the tree in your living room? Not all are toxic to our feline babies, so let’s let them help decide!

Two very popular types of Christmas trees, Spruce and Douglas Fir are considered safe tree for cats. Most cedar trees are not toxic to cats, so switch it up and try an Eastern Red cedar this year! Other trees that are often lumped into the cedar family that are safe for cats include Atlas cedar, cedar of Lebanon, and North White cedar. Some pine trees can be poisonous to cats, however. Steer clear of Norfolk pine, House pine, and Australian pine, as they can be cause reactions in cats. Find out what is available in your area and do research before you decide! You know your cat’s behavior more than anyone else, so consult with your feline babies while your deciding on a Christmas tree, especially if you’ve had your cat’s hair tested for food and environmental sensitivities and intolerances. Try to create a special area away from the Christmas tree for your cat to play and celebrate Christmas! Make sure your kitty feels special and comfortable amongst all the holiday madness and changes in the home.

Keep in mind, the means of toxicity discussed here refers to the sap that cats may come into contact if they bite a branch, or rub on and climb on the tree. If you see sap on your cat, wash it off immediately. Kitties who may ingest the tree needles, monitor them because the needles can irritate (and even puncture) the digestive tract. Some additional tips to decorating for Christmas include keeping catnip and cat toys away from the tree, and be cautious of which decorations (like tinsel) are placed on the lower branches. To discourage their playful curiosity, try to place your tree in an area where it is free standing. Keeping chairs, couches, tables, and shelves away from the tree will take away opportunities for your little lion to explore the tree! If you think your cat will still want to check out your Christmas tree, companies such as Nature’s Miracle make sprays that discourage interest. If you opt for an artificial tree this year, be aware if your cat attempts to eat or chew on the branches!

Have a safe and happy Christmas!

One of the new buzz words or phrases today is “heavy metals” and or “heavy metal toxicity”. With all of the medical issues people are having today, this topic of conversation seems to come up more times than not.

Our bodies were designed as perfect well oiled working machines. If everything is working properly, we should be able to naturally detox. Unfortunately, some of us accumulate more toxins than others in our tissues. Why is this so? Some of us were born nutritionally deficient and already exposed to certain toxins that were transferred in-utero via the placenta from our mothers (yes people you can blame your moms!) Others have poor diets, some live in toxic environments, and others have a slower metabolic process.

Then let’s add the fact that the world we live in is polluted. Toxins come from the air we breath, water we drink, the soil, and the food we eat. EVERYONE is exposed to toxins on a daily basis. Unless you decide to live life in a bubble, there is no way to avoid exposure to these harmful toxins.

I have spoken with people after their test results have come in and they have said to me there is no way that I could have been exposed to these items. However, did you know that pesticides and fertilizers sprayed in another country can be carried through the air due to winds and deposited in our water and soil. Amalgam fillings in your teeth can account for high levels of mercury toxicity. Deodorants, shampoos, bleach, detergents, cosmetics, soaps, all contain chemicals that can be absorbed through the skin and end up being stored in your tissues. We are still seeing the effects of nuclear plant melt-downs in opposite ends of the world due to the prevailing winds.

Now are you still wondering why our bodies can be a toxic waste dump? These toxins can contribute to multiple diseases and can be the cause of all of the aches and pains you might be feeling.

You have all heard about the common heavy metals and minerals such as Lead, Mercury, Aluminum, Arsenic, Platinum, Gold, and Silver. However, did you know that the 5Strands Affordable test can test for some far out metals/minerals such as Polnium, Uranium, Radium, Osmium, Molybenum, Rhodium, and Scandium. Some of you may have not heard of these metals/minerals but they do show up on our customers reports.

Let’s take one of the most obscure metals/minerals- Polonium and talk about it in relationship to how it could possibly show up on someone’s report.

Polonium- Because it is present in small concentrations, isolation of polonium from natural sources is a tedious process. The general population is exposed to small amounts of polonium as a radon daughter in indoor air. Polonium is indeed an element naturally present in all humans, contributing appreciably to natural background dose, with wide geographical and cultural variations, and particularly high levels in arctic residents. Tobacco smoking causes additional exposure to polonium. Polonium-210 in tobacco contributes to many of the cases of lung cancer worldwide. Most of this polonium is derived from lead-210 deposited on tobacco leaves from the atmosphere; the lead-210 is a product of radon-222 gas, much of which appears to originate from the decay of radium-226 from fertilizers applied to the tobacco soils. Polonium is found in the food chain, especially in seafood.

Polonium is a radiation hazard only if it is taken internally through breathing, eating, our entering through broken skin/wound. It is not a hazard on the outside of the body as it will not go through unbroken skin. Long term exposure can lead to cancer, organ failure, and even death.

You might say, why do I need to know this information? My point is that even though you may not have heard of these heavy metals, you are being exposed to them on a regular basis. Now how your body eliminates them is the question. You must figure out what routine works for YOU. Not all bodies are created equal. Finding the right nutrition plan that includes foods that will naturally help the body detox is key. 5Strands Affordable testing can help you with determining what you should be focusing on. The purpose of this test is to help you determine how to naturally take care of your body without taking prescription medications. Medications are filled will all kinds of additives and chemicals that can add to your bodies toxification. No one talks about this since it is easier to just take a pill and move on with your day. Medications are only masking your symptoms. 5Strands Affordable Testing wants to teach you how to become responsible for your own health.
