Muscadine Wine: The Southern Secret

Introduction

Mild to moderate wine consumption has long been linked to health and longevity because it contains high levels of polyphenols. These are compounds that have the ability to reduce DNA damage. These phenolic compounds, often termed “antioxidants,” are now becoming a major focus in the anti-aging world. One wine variety stands out among the rest because it contains more antioxidants and anti-aging properties than any other. Every southern girl’s first love and every wine connoisseur’s punch line…Muscadine wine.

Vitis rotundifolia

Muscadine grapes, or Vitis rotundifolia, are truly America’s native grape. Their story and tang are 
deeply rooted in southern culture, and they are now being recognized for more than their unique heritage. Genetically, muscadines contain 20 chromosomes compared to the usual 19 of other 
grape varieties. This extra chromosome contributes to its super phenolic properties. Many different antioxidants are found in muscadine grapes, but there are two that have been studied and linked to longevity that are found at significantly high levels: Resveratrol, and Ellagic Acid.

Ellagic Acid

Ellagic acid has been recently highlighted for its ability to reduce inflammation. In an Oregon State University study, ellagic acid slowed both growth and formation of fat cells. Fat cells are storage tanks of energy, and are important for maintaining a healthy metabolism. However, when they grow excessively in number and size, they begin releasing proinflammatory proteins. To avoid excess inflammation, fat cells need to be maintained within a certain range. Ellagic acid has this capability, which gives muscadine grapes very unique health properties because ellagic acid is not found in other grape varieties.

Resveratrol

Resveratrol is found at high levels in many red wine varieties but it is highest in the muscadine grape. Resveratrol is well studied for its ability to reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease, but more recent studies have found it also stimulates longevity genes. Their activation drives DNA repair, metabolism, and many other processes that are essential to anti-aging. The ability of resveratrol to directly stimulate these processes is the thread between muscadine wine, health, and longevity.

Muscadine Wine and the future of Anti-aging

Inflammation is deemed the source of aging. Combating inflammation is essential to longevity, which is why resveratrol and ellagic acid are beneficial. A great source of these and other antioxidants is muscadine wine. It is both youthful on the pallet and on the body, and so has gained headway in both the wine and the anti-aging world.

Allergy vs. Intolerance Yes, There Is A Difference!

You may have heard people talking about food allergies. When you hear that phrase, most people think about someone eating food and their tongue or throat swelling and going into anaphylaxis (severe reaction that can result in death). This situation described is actually the worst case scenario that can happen but the one that actually happens the least! Only about 2% of the population has a “true” allergic reaction. Allergists will define a food allergy by a very limited set of symptoms that can be seen. The symptoms include anaphylaxis, hives, asthma, and eczema. The true way of diagnosing an allergy is done by examining the immunological response (typically through a blood test). When exposed to a certain antigen or allergen, the body’s immune system makes an antibody called immunoglobulin E (IgE). The reaction is fast occurring (immediate). Once an individual has developed this type of an IgE response, it will not change or disappear.

When experiencing symptoms such as bloating, nausea, abdominal pain, headaches, constipation, diarrhea, cough, runny nose, itchy eyes or ears, etc., these symptoms typically coincide with what we call “Intolerances”. Intolerances are considered a “delayed” reaction or a non-IgE response. An intolerance typically occurs because your body has a sensitivity to the item. It may be due to an absence of an enzyme, a present chemical, or even because your body just doesn’t like a particular item (check out the list of items the Deluxe Test covers)!

The biggest difference between an allergy and an intolerance is the immunological response and then secondly, the fact that the intolerance response is not forever. Once an elimination of the items you are intolerant to has been removed from your diet, your body can heal itself. After 2-3 months, you may be able to introduce the item back into your diet slowly and/or occasionally without experiencing any symptoms. Intolerances can change over time, so it is important to pay attention to your symptoms. It is not normal for a person to have constant headaches, runny nose, itchy eyes, etc. If you are experiencing these symptoms, there is something that you are eating or in contact with that is not right for you… intolerant too.

Please remember that just because you are eating “healthy”, some of those healthy foods might not be right for you!
Please note that some of these symptoms may overlap between an allergy and an intolerance. The only way to know for sure is to test for the IgE antibodies to determine if you have a true allergy to a particular item.
