Blue-Green Water Algae Test
Testing for Blue Green Algae is now quick and easy! Fill the sampling container with water.
A chemical reaction will take place which will heat up the container.
Leave the container to stand for 10 minutes, then use the pipette to draw some of the water from the container and place a drop of the water into the aperture in the analysis slide.
The test result will be ready in 5 minutes. Depending on the result, one or two lines will appear in the analysis window.
1 line at C = no blue-green algae toxins detected
2 lines = blue-green algae toxins detected.
More detailed instructions are provided inside the kit.

What Is Blue Green Algae?
- When Do Harmful Algae Blooms Occur? Blue-green algae prefer warm, calm, sunny weather and water temperatures higher than 75 °F. Blooms usually occur during summer and early fall, but can occur other times of the year, if conditions are right.
- What Are Harmful Algae Blooms? When blue-green algal blooms produce cyanotoxins (toxins produced by cyanobacteria) that can make humans and animals sick, they are considered harmful. In general, algae are not harmful.
- Possible Health Effects? You can become sick if you swallow, have skin contact with, or breathe in airborne water droplets while swimming, boating, waterskiing, tubing, bathing, or showering in water that has harmful algae or if you drink water that contains algal toxins. If you become sick, you might experience vomiting, diarrhea, rash, eye irritation, cough, sore throat, and headache. Symptoms generally begin with hours of exposure.
- Can Animals Be Effected? Pets, especially dogs, are susceptible to harmful algae because they swallow more water while swimming and doing activities (such as retrieving a ball from the water). Animals can experience symptoms within minutes of exposure to the toxins. Symptoms include vomiting, diarrhea, weakness, difficulty breathing, and seizures. In the worst cases, animals have died. If your pet experiences these symptoms after exposure to algae, contact your veterinarian.
Kaitlyn BeckertMar 4, 2020, 11:47:21 AMWith the arrival of warm weather, we love taking the dogs to lakes, rivers, streams and ponds. Blue green algae is a huge concern and it's stressful to know that toxic algae is not always obvious to the naked eye. To ease our worries, we tested our neighborhood pond for toxins using this Blue Green Algae Test. Thankfully, the test determined that the water is not contaminated and is safe to swim in! We plan on buying a few more kits because just because a body of water tested negative one time, it could still become a threat in the future, especially as weather changes.
Jonathon SmidthJan 9, 2020, 10:48:14 AMIt's amazing to be able to know if my dog could be negatively affected by water. Can't wait to order more for the summer months.
KatieNov 11, 2019, 10:25:12 PMI can’t thank 5 Stands Testing enough for coming out with this product. My Aussie, Tyber, is OBSESSED with water but being from North Carolina where some of the fatal cases occurred, I was extremely scared and stressed when it came to him swimming. The test is easiest (the hardest part is getting Tyber to wait the ~10 minutes) but it’s well worth the wait to ensure his safety. Thank you for not only creating a product that works but one that means so much to water loving dog parents.
LydiaSep 8, 2019, 10:14:49 AMThis could legit save lives. They are so affordable, I have bought a few for my friends with dogs and a boat so they can test their lake water before having their dogs jump in.
Trisha HallowaySep 4, 2019, 03:07:58 PMAfter hearing about a girl's dog dying from blue-green algae in the lake she often brought her dog to, I knew I needed to buy something like this to test the lake water where I bring my dog. It is something that can be easily tested, so why not do it? It was so easy to do the test, and it showed there were no blue-green algae toxins present in the lake. I am definitely buying a few more tests since they are so affordable. I would so much rather be safe than sorry.
